Pawsitively Pets: Antler Dog Bone Review by Shiner!

Pawsitively Pets Review by Shiner:
As with every product we review here, I wanted to make sure the antlers were good quality first. The dog bone antlers that come from Peak Antler Company are naturally shed by either elk or deer, so no animals are injured or harmed. The antlers are just a good old fashioned "bone" straight from nature. The Peak Antler Company's antlers are collected from forests or ranches around Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. All from the USA, which I know is very important for many dog parents right now.  . . .  See full review HERE
 Thanks Shiner!!!

NEW PRODUCT! - Antler Sprinkles

All Natural Antler Sprinkles are the easiest way to provide necessary minerals naturally & safely for pets. Just sprinkle some on your dogs food or add them to your favorite homemade dog treat recipe!
(recipe below)
 Approximately 8 ounces/bag
(quart size bag)

All natural ground elk & deer antler provide supplements for necessary minerals such as calcium, phosphorus & magnesium. (*see study below) The benefits of minerals found naturally in antlers will aid in faster recovery from physical exertion and injury as well as increased mobility. They are known to support and renew joints as well.

As in all our antler dog products, the antlers used are naturally shed deer or elk antler. No fillers, preservatives, added color or anything else! It’s just ground up antler dust, a calcium bone supplement the way nature intended! No animals are hurt in the collection of our antler products!

Another pet product inspired by our rescue pup Aussie, and now credit to her new little brother Brodie as well! How you ask? by loving to hang out in the shop and lick the floor after a day of cutting up dog bones!  Since we cannot invite all pups to the shop to clean our floor, we ground some up and packaged them for you! See Aussies business start up story HERE. & Brodies corner . . . a puppy's opinion HERE.

*“Growing antlers are comprised mostly of proteins (80% by weight); whereas, mature (hardened) antlers are comprised of roughly equal amounts of proteins and minerals. Studies have shown that calcium and phosphorus are by far the two most common minerals in deer antlers comprising nearly 30–35% of the mature antler by weight. However, they are not the only minerals present. A University of Georgia study (Miller et al. 1985) detected 11 different minerals in the whitetail’s antlers. In addition to calcium (19.01%) and phosphorous (10.13%), the next two most common elements reported in the study were magnesium (1.09%) and sodium (0.50%). Lesser amounts of other minerals were found including potassium, barium, iron, aluminum, zinc, strontium, and manganese.” - www.leapoutdoors.com

Brodies Corner - Antler Chew Preference

The Brodie & Antler Puppy Story
We have had our Blue Heeler rescue puppy, Brodie, for 2 months now and have discovered his preferences for our All Natural Antler Dog Bones.
When we brought him home at 8 weeks, I took him to our small sized bin of antlers and he choose one for himself.  He preferred split antlers, although I didn't feel they were safe as split antlers are not as structurally strong and I worried he could break a piece off.  As it turns out he is not an aggressive chewer even as a puppy, combined with the fact that his attention span doesn't last more than a minute with the antler at this age!  It was perfect in that he had full access to the marrow right away.  It is still in his bucket of toys he can pull out to entertain himself, I do not worry about it now.

At 12 weeks I thought he could use a larger antler, so I took him to the medium sized antler chews.  He chose a very thick elk antler.  I think again because the marrow is more accessible and his attention span is now only about 2-3 minutes with the antler bone.  (I don't believe this is the case with other pups, I think it's his personality.)  He would still love this bone and it would have been size appropriate for months, but we lost it on a road trip to Kansas.  FYI - Antlers are GREAT for traveling as they do not have a foul smell when being chewed as other dog treats, especially in confined spaces, and especially traveling with motion sickness prone folks like myself sensitive to odors!

As puppies do, he would fall asleep at any moment, including antler bone time!

He is 4 1/2 months now and we took another trip to our antler bins to replace the lost one.  He choose a large antler bone this time just for fun.  Not surprisingly he again chose an elk antler with the marrow exposed a bit more than others.
(REMEMBER he is NOT an aggressive chewer!  I always recommend deer base end antlers for very aggressive chewers as they are more dense!  He also chews on deer, just prefers elk when given a choice.)
He likes to carry this one all over the house and yard, toss it around or lick it more than actually chewing on it.  I even caught him rolling around upside down on top of it.  Possibly due to a bit unique shape and heaviness compared to his size.  Regardless, it is a great toy, chewed on when he is in the mood, safe enough I do not feel the need to constantly monitor him, and quite entertaining for us to watch.  If we don't loose this one traveling it will be great to see how long it lasts!!!

He is so stinkin' cute, I just LOVE him!
Brodie is rolling around with the antler barking at it and smiling . . . literally ROTFL!
I wish I had caught it on video!

Why Antlers for dogs?

all natural antler dog bone fawn and dog

Antler dog bones are set apart from traditional bones as they will not stain your carpet, splinter or turn into slimy goo, AND they last much longer than other dog chews. They are naturally shed deer or elk antler pieces, NO fillers, preservatives, added color or anything else!
It’s just a bone the way nature intended! No animals are hurt in the collection of this bone!

Frequently asked questions:

Do you treat the antlers with anything?

  • They are 100% all natural, just as if your pup were hiking in the forest to find a treat. We basically sand blast any debris or residue off the antlers.

How do you prepare the antlers for pets?

  • We cut them to the desired size and sort them by diameter to get the proper size appropriate for pets. Then remove any dirt or residue.

What do I need to be concerned about before giving an antler to my dog?

  • As with ANY dog chew toy, to ensure safety, remove the antler bone when it becomes a choking hazard. Choosing the appropriate size is most important to avoid possible hazards. (see below)

Our Story - Aussie

ThePeak Antler Company's All Natural Antler Dog Bone products were started by the family dog Aussie, an Australian Shepard/Dingo mix rescue from a shelter.
Aussie sharing her bones with neighbor friend Gunny
Our main work involves Antler Chandeliers, Antler Lamps and Antler Furniture using all types of Elk, Moose, Fallow Deer, White Tail Deer and Mule Deer. Aussie would sneak into the shop and steal good antlers out of the pile. She would run off into the yard, chew on them for hours and bury them to save for later. She wouldn't give them back even when I caught her stealing "red-pawed".
We came home one day to find she had discovered the antlers in the coffee table as well, that wasn't so cute. It became obvious she loved antler more than any other bone or puppy chews we gave her. I cut up a few pieces of scrap antler for her in hopes of preventing more theft and save our furniture. It worked! Everyone was happy and the furniture was saved! Soon after, a friend with an adorably large black Labrador retriever puppy who also discovered antler accent furniture in their home told us their story. We shared a scrap piece of antler which again successfully saved their antler furniture and entertained the puppy for hours. They began asking for more antler pieces for their friends dogs and the news spread fast. It grew organically into a business by demand, just the way nature intended!
